Sell your house the easy way using Feng Shui

Have a house to sell or looking to buy a new one? I hope you know feng shui can help you. If you plan to sell your house, or have been trying to sell it for a while, here are some proven-and-true tips to get the energy moving:

1. GO OUTSIDE. You duplex, your condo, your house, whatever it is that you are selling, and look at it from a bit of a distance. Better yet, do it with a friend who has not seen it for a while. Jot down all the thoughts that come to mind in the first 2-3 minutes.

Do not censor it or get deffensive; the more open you are to criticism, the better off you will be when presenting it to other people. You might think the big purple frog looks cool by your main door and is even good feng shui (no, it is not) but potential buyers will not appreciate it. As with every sale, it is a lot about selling a specific emotion, rather than the commodity itself. Make your main entrance look fresh and inviting.

2. GO FRESH AND GO GREEN. If you own a house, definetely invest in some landscaping; it will increase your property value. Do some research and make a call to a good landscape professional; it may create a totally new energy around your home.

If you live in a duplex or a condo and there is not much "outside" to work on, focus on the main entrance and bring vibrant chi, or energy, right as you come in - a big elegant plant or a vase with fresh cut flowers, good lighting, beautiful art and a feel of spaciousness/expansion the strategic placement of mirrors is the secret here!

3. LESS IS MORE. When you shop for anything, and I mean anything - clothes, appliances, food - it is often helpful to see the item in action i.e have your skirt on a manequin, try a sample of the food, etc. However, would you want to pay full price for a used item? Probably not. Think of it and apply it to your home - the less "personal", or "used" you make it, the better. Show to the best how the space can be used, but do not overdo it with personal touches.

Create a spa feel in the bathroom, but do hide all your personal items (buyers do not need to know which toothpaste brand you prefer) make the kitchen smell and look good, but take it easy on how you save with recycling cans, etc etc. You get the idea.

Most importantly be aware of the "almighty" triangle when selling a home: the Kitchen, the Bathroom and the Bedroom. Buyers need to know they will sleep well, eat well, and well, unwind well if they chose to buy your home. Treat their imagination well.

Feng Shui tips for small apartments

Applying feng shui in a small apartment or studio can be a challenge, as often there is little or no separation between your living, working and sleeping space. In other words, how do you apply feng shui if your bedroom is part of your living room, and the kitchen is right close to it, all areas with no walls to separate the different feng shui energies?

Even though this is a common situation in many big cities, it does not mean you can't have good feng shui in a small apartment or a studio.

Two main skills you absolutely have to master if you want to achieve good feng shui in a small apartment or studio are:
  • Clutter clearing and good organization skills;
  • Subtle skill of creating a harmonious division between different open areas.
Clutter clearing with feng shui, once you get to start practicing it, can become a really exciting and healing process. How about knowing how to create separations between areas with different activities, though? Wouldn't that make the space look even smaller? It might. But you have to keep trying until you find the perfect solution for your small living space. Basically, you need to create pathways of energy in your small space, and provide as much privacy as possible for your bedroom.

Each space will ask for specific solutions, you might be working from home, for example, thus you will need to deal with more space dividers / separations in your home. Some of the typical feng shui dividers for a small studio and apartment are: various screens (from rice paper ones to ornately painted screens), tall plants, a bookshelf or a row of curtains.

To help you decide the best type of space divider to use, first find out the feng shui energy / feng shui element needed in the area. Knowing which feng shui element is needed for good feng shui in your home will help you with your choice. For example, if you need a divider for the South feng shui area of your small studio or apartment, some good feng shui choices will be: a tall plant, a wood screen, a wood bookshelf or a row of red curtains. Choices that are not recommended, feng shui-wise, for the South area, are colors blue and black, or mirrored screens.

Let's look at some of the main feng shui priorities in a small apartment or studio.

  • Main door & entryway. In feng shui, the main door is called the mouth of Chi, or Universal energy. If your apartment is small, it becomes especially important to have a clear and open entryway, thus allowing more energy to enter and nourish your living space. Space saving solutions, good lighting, uplifting art, vibrant or soothing colors and objects of beauty can be brought into any space independent of its size. Because your apartment is small, put an extra effort into having the entryway as clean as possible, with no shoes, clothing or unnecessary items lying around in plain view.

  • Sleeping Area / Bedroom When you live in a small apartment, one of the biggest feng shui challenges is to create a bedroom space that feels (and functions) well as a bedroom. Be mindful of creating enough separation between your living and sleeping areas. Feng Shui-wise, focus on the place you see first as you wake up and last before you go to sleep, be sure it is not the TV, the computer or the laundry basket. Have some inspring energy to greet you every morning.

  • Mirrors expand the space, attract more light, as well as bring the water feng shui energy. Easy to understand why mirrors are called the aspirin of feng shui! Definitely one of the best feng shui cures for a small apartment or a studio, mirrors will help you visually expand your space and create more breathing room. Best to choose big mirrors that go with your decor and place them to either bring more light or reflect something beautiful. Best feng shui areas for mirrors are East, Southeast, and North.

Colors in Feng Shui

Colors in feng shui are divided according to the elements e.g. green color would represent the wood element, blue would be water element. To know more about which color represents which element click here

Different methods in practice
There are different methods in practice for choosing a color for a certain area in your house.

Location
In this method the color is chosen according the area of the house. Below is the list
North – Blue (water element colors)
Northwest – Gray, metallic color, white (metal colors)
West - Gray, metallic color, white
Southwest – Earth colors
South – Fire colors (Red, orange etc)
Southeast – Green, turquoise, aqua colors
East - Green, turquoise, aqua colors

Flying star
In this method the flying star chart of the house is used to determine the colors that will be beneficial in a particular area e.g. if a certain area in your house has #1 star (beneficial water star) then you could use metallic colors or white or gray to enhance the benevolent star.

Bazi
In this method the person’s useful element according to the person’s natal chart is used to determine the color scheme. For e.g. if a person’s useful element would be water then a blue color scheme would be used.

Personal gua number
In this method the person’s gua number is used to select beneficial color scheme. For e.g. a Gua 2 person would have to opt for a fire color scheme or earth color scheme.

House Bazhai
In this method the color scheme followed is according to the bazhai of the house. For e.g. in a south (li) sitting house, east is sheng qi area, the element of sheng qi is wood therefore a blue (water element) based color scheme would be used to enhance the star.

All these methods can seem extremely confusing especially for a layman. The best method for a layman to follow would be the “Location” method. If you are still confused then best is to opt for pastel colors.

Feng Shui use of the color white

The Feng Shui Color of Purity and Innocence, White is also considered one of the supreme colors in Yogi traditions. My first Yoga teacher used to say that this is the color of Completion, Ultimate Wisdom and Assimilation of all Life Lessons. Be it in the fresh snow or in the immaculate dress of a beautiful bride, pure White Color fascinates us with its feng shui energy of Innocence and Tranquility.

Feng shui-wise, White is the color that belongs to the feng shui element of Metal. Its feng shui energy is crisp, clear, clean and fresh. White is the color of beginnings, as well as clear endings.

Excellent for feng shui use anywhere in your home, especially to contrast brighter colors; White Color is highly recommended for the feng shui areas where Metal is the dominant element, such as West and Northwest (according to the Ba-Gua.)

Try to limit an all-White scheme in the feng shui areas of East and Southeast, and bring it more as an accent, rather than a dominant color.

Having a fresh, White space - be it your meditation room or your bathroom - will soothe your psyche and spread healing feng shui vibrations throughout your home.

It will also fill your subconscious with the feng shui energy of ever-expanding possibilities and a bright new future.

Feng Shui tips for renovation

Are you thinking of renovating or remodeling your home? If you do, I strongly suggest you look into feng shui for remodeling and renovating and take some time to assure the success of your renovation by applying feng shui principles. Think how this renovation will change the flow of energy in your home and employ feng shui to achieve the best results for you and your family. Feng Shui knowledge is about your connection to your immediate environment and its influence on your health, well-being and overall quality of your life, thus, feng shui for renovating and remodeling should be high on your list of priorities when planning to remodel. If you are renovating because your family is growing, here are some feng shui tips to consider:
  • Allow for a balanced space for each family member, i.e. if you need two additional bedrooms for your growing family, create bedrooms that are somewhat similar in size, versus a bigger and a smaller one. You want you children to feel equally loved and taken care of, versus fighting who has the bigger bedroom and why.

  • With all the importance we place on the kitchen as the heart of the house and the area strongly connected to abundance, you do not want to change the flow in a way that you see the kitchen right as you come home, or right from your bedroom, as this is not good feng shui.

  • Do not overlook the importance of lighting, especially in areas where there is little natural light, do discuss and plan the lighting options in advance with your architect or contractor to be sure your needs are covered.

  • Familiarize yourself with the basics of the Ba-Gua, or the energy map of your space, as well as the interaction of the five elements, to be sure you have a good foundation for the energy flow in your space. For example, let's say you are adding to the South area of your House and you are selecting materials and colors, etc. Knowing that South is connected to the element of Fire, you will avoid selecting materials with a predominant black or blue color scheme, as these are Water element colors, and Water puts down the Fire, thus these colors will weaken the energy in the South area of your space.
Keep exploring feng shui; start with the basics and then move on to more complex levels. The decision to apply feng shui knowledge in your life might be one of the best decisions you ever made for your own happiness and well-being.

1. Open all windows and aerate the space well to bring fresh energy.

2. Get dressed in clothing that is practical, made of natural fibers and makes you feel good!

3. Bring some Fire Element colors for an additional boost of energy to the space you are working at.

4. Put on the music you love and start small, focusing on one area to give you a sense of accomplishment.

5. Finish the process before you get tired of it and treat yourself to something really nice, be it a good cup of coffee at the best cafe in town or a movie with a friend.

Feng Shui for family harmony

To have a family that is loving and supportive at all times is a blessing. To have a healthy, beautiful and happy environment in which to live with your family is to be blessed twice.

To bring more harmony into your family life, consider implementing some basic feng shui cures that are guaranteed to shift the energy in your home, balance and harmonize it.

  • For example, a fountain in the East area of your home will bring benevolent Chi to your family. Be mindful about keeping the water clean at all times.

  • Have many happy images of your family throughout the house, especially in the kitchen, living room and the East area of your House.

  • Be mindful about keeping your bedroom, as well as the bedroom of your children in the best possible condition.

  • Balance your environment according to the five elements, taking into consideration the element of each family member.

  • Lower the level of electromagnetic fields in your home, limit the use of harsh and dangerous chemicals. Opt for having a healthy home.
A harmonious home is a place that can accommodate a variety of activities and a variety of people without losing its healing essence; and creating a place with such power takes time. The beauty, though, of this creation process is that the more love you put into it, the more love you receive back.

Do not delay and start loving your home now, no matter how it looks at the moment. It just needs your help to uncover its healing potential.

Good Feng Shui areas in 2008

After reviewing the challenging feng shui areas for 2008 let's look into the good energy ones and apply basic feng shui advice to harness the potential and use it for best feng shui in your space.

Just as a reminder, the Chinese Feng Shui 2008 New Year starts on February 4th, 2008; it is the feng shui year of the Earth Rat.

East feng shui area is the luckiest feng shui sector in 2008 with the annual star 8. The Wealth Star is present here in 2008. A feng shui aquarium is an excellent feng shui cure, or any water feng shui cure, for example the feng shui use of a mirror. To sum it up, a feng shui water feature in the East will greatly improve your money luck in 2008.

Southeast feng shui area has the 9 star, a Joyful, Happy feng shui star. Work with feng shui crystals, especially amethyst or pyrite (click to see a FREE video on the feng shui use of crystals.) Southeast is a good area to strengthen with feng shui tips for the improvement of your luck in any areas: be it romance, career or money. 9 red items can be a good feng shui addition, be it nine red stones or a favorite picture depicting nine red items, for example nine flowers.

North is the feng shui area that can strengthen the luck if you are looking for a career promotion. 8 hematites can bring good energy to this feng shui area. A small feng shui water feature will work, too, even if it is a small bowl of fresh water. You can also bring the energy of water to this area with colors blue and black, as well as mirrors (see the FREE video on the right feng shui use of mirrors.)

Northeast feng shui area is a good area for study, so let your children spend more time there doing homework or playing. It is a good area for your home office, too.

Center is finally getting a better star, the star of Romance. Strengthen the center with your feng shui for love cures -pink crystals (rose quartz), images of happy couples, etc. A feng shui water feature is good here, too, as well as the vibrations of sound/soothing music.

Southwest feng shui area can still bring some luck if you use a small water cure.

This is about it for the 2008 update on the new feng shui energies. Hope you have a year filled with love and harmony in your family, success and powerful breakthroughs in your professional life, and, most importantly, vibrant health.

Best to you in 2008!

Color and Feng Shui

Hi, I'm Rodika Tchi for About.com Home and Garden. Color is one of the easiest ways to shift the energy in your space with feng shui.

However, how do you know which color to paint your bedroom, or your kitchen, or your living room? Here are some basic feng shui tips.

Definition of the Fire Feng Shui Element

There are five elements in feng shui, and we need a balanced presence of all five in order to create a harmonious home environment.

The first element is fire. The fire elements in your space activates your own personal energy. It brings support in your career efforts and helps bring recognition to your work.

Where to Position the Fire Colors

Fire elements colors are red, orange, purple, pink, and strong yellow. Feng shui-wise, your house needs fire colors in the south, southwest, and northeast areas of your home.

You can paint a feature wall in your choice of a fire color, or you can bring the fire elements with décor accessories, such as a red painting, a vase, or a red piece of furniture.

Definition of the Earth Feng Shui Element

The second feng shui element is earth. A balanced feng shui earth element in your home will help create stability and harmony in all your relationships. Earth colors are light yellow, all sandy, and all beige colors.

Where to Position Earth Colors

Feng shui-wise, earth colors are recommended for the center of your home, as well as northeast and southwest.

You can bring the earth energy with the wall color, or maybe the color of upholstery fabric or art.

Definition of the Metal Feng Shui Element

The next feng shui element is metal. Metal element brings the energy of clarity, preciseness, and focus.

Metal colors are whites, grays, and all metallic surfaces. Metal energy is recommended in the west, northwest, as well as north area of your space. Paint your wall with a coat of fresh white paint, or go for predominantly white furniture.

Definition of Water Feng Shui Element

Water feng shui element is the symbol of abundance. A balanced water energy in your space will bring a refreshing energy of calm, purity, trust, and renewal.

Water colors are black and blue. Water energy is needed in the north, east, and southeast areas of your space. A gentle light blue wall color can considerably refresh and uplift your space. Or you can choose to go for an art depicting colors, or a representation of the water element.

Definition of the Wood Feng Shui Element

The fifth feng shui element is the element of wood. A balanced wood element in your space will bring the energy of vibrant health and lush abundance.

Wood colors are brown and green. Use wood colors in the east, southeast, and south areas of your space. A light green wall color can be an excellent choice for a home office or a family room.

So there you have it, a basic feng shui guide on how to use color in your home to create good energy. To learn more, visit us on the web at homegarden.about.com. Thanks for watching.

The 7 basic steps of Feng Shui

Getting started with feng shui can be easy when you start with the feng shui basics and gradually move on to the more complex feng shui levels. To help you get started, here are some helpful feng shui steps for beginners:
  1. Clear Out your Clutter, get rid of everything you do not love. Clutter Clearing is a time and energy consuming process that will feel like therapy, but it will help you "lighten up the load", so to speak. Do not skip this step, as it is an essential one in creating a harmonious, clear energy in your space.

  2. Have Good Quality Air and Good Quality Light in your space - these two crucial elements are very important for good Chi, or energy. Open the windows often, introduce air-purifying plants or use an air-purifier. Allow as much natural light as possible into your space, and consider using full-spectrum lights.

  3. Define the Ba-Gua of your space by using the feng shui compass. You will find out which areas of your space are connected to specific areas of your life by looking at your Ba-Gua. For example, Southeast area is connected to the flow of abundance in your life.

  4. Study the Five Elements Feng Shui Theory to help you balance all the feng shui five elements in your home, as well as strengthen specific elements in specific areas. For example, if you are working on attracting more Abundance, you will introduce the feng shui element of Wood, as well as the Water element into the Southeast area of your space.

  5. Find out your Feng Shui Birth Element and create your environment to support your own personal feng shui element. For example, if your own element is Fire, you would introduce the expressions of Fire, as well as Wood element, as Wood feeds the Fire in the feng shui relationship of the five elements.

  6. Find your Kua Number and position yourself so that you benefit throughout the day from your best directions. Adjust the position of your bed, your home office, dining, etc. For example, if your Kua number is 1, you would do your best to face one of the following directions: Southeast, East, South, and North.

  7. Always be mindful of the state of your home and how the energy in your home influences your well-being. Make a habit of paying close attention to the so-called "triangle" that is deeply connected to your health - your bedroom, your bathroom and your kitchen.

Nothing is static in the world of energy, be wise and keep your house happy.

Color your world the Feng Shui way

Here’s a design principle that has definitely stood the test of time: feng shui, the Eastern practice of analyzing where things go to create the most healthful and beneficial energy flow. Jayne Pelosi, who has her own design firm, Renaissance Interior Design, is a big believer in feng shui and has more and more clients who are interested in it. "They may not always be able to pronounce it, but lots of people have heard of it and are more accepting of it," she says. "It is a simple way to make a change in your house and see if you feel different."

Primary Colors
In her book, Pelosi identifies five elements and their associated color that elicit specific energies in your home:

Black or blue, associated with water energy, support inner work, helping us to concentrate, contemplate, mediate and handle creative endeavors. Blue can slow the heart and breathing rates and lower blood pressure. It can be used to increase coolness, to calm and to create privacy.

Green is associated with wood energy, that of growth, decisiveness and action. It can motivate internal change.

Red is associated with fire, which supports life energy. It’s the color of blood, and can increase heart rate, respiration and blood pressure. It also can promote activity and alleviate depression. It’s clearly the color of passion and love.

Yellow is associated with earth energy, representing Mother Earth. It can cheer, infuse with hope, clarify and elevate mental activity. It also creates a sense of stability and nurturing. Yellow is often used for children with dyslexia to help improve focus.

White and metallic colors are associated with metal energy. They can support carefulness and focus, as well as purity.

Combination Colors
Mixing colors also mixes the feng shui energies related to them.

Salmon, a combo of yellow/orange and red/orange, is a unique balance of earth and fire elements that’s quite harmonious. Use salmon to call attention to the heart of a space, create a sense of abundance and encourage conversation.

Turquoise, a blue-green combo, evokes the qualities of wood and water. It has both the contemplative qualities of blue and the life of green, making it a great choice for spaces that allow movement and growth.

Lavender, a mix of the qualities of blue and purple, can evoke a sense of calm, spirituality, contemplation and quiet. Use lavender to minimize high activity, calm a stressful situation or create a special spiritual space. Lavender is best not used in spaces where conversation or high activity is encouraged.

Feng shui tips for your home

1) There should be no shoes or slippers lying around outside the main door of your house. Remove it if you can. Allow that space at the main door to be free and clear. The chi (energy) rides with the wind and will collect all the smell of those shoes and slippers into your house causing sickness. Ch’i then travels about in your house looking for water to stay but if there are no water fountains or fish tanks, then the Ch’i will be dispersed by wind.

2) There should be no television sets in your bedrooms: If you cannot get rid of that habit then after watching the television cover it with a plastic table cloth. Remember it has to be plastic and not simply cloth.

3) There should be no mirrors opposite your bed or at the side of your bed. Mirrors opposite the bed can attract a third party to the relationship. Therefore, do not place mirrors anywhere you like and especially in your bedroom.

4) Place an indoor water fountain in your home, position in a favourable area to attract whatever you want in your life.

5) If you already have a fish tank in your house, be careful. A fish tank placed correctly can bring about greater fortune, as you will tap on the "Divine Water Dragon's Den". But if you tap wrongly, it can cause you to have lawsuits, bankruptcy, work pressure, troubles and problems. If you noticed any of these after placing the fish tank for approximately four months, shift your fish tank to another location.

6) In your kitchen, ensure that opposite your stove there is no refrigerator, washing machine, washbasin and toilet. The fire and water crash causing family members to have disagreements.

7) Try not to allow children to sleep on mattresses on the floor. Yes, this allows young children not to fall off beds but it also causes young children to fall sick frequently. The reason is: chi is not able to flow underneath the bed. Ideally, chi should circulate around the mattress where our children sleep to allow them to be healthy.

8) For young children, try to have their back to the wall when they write. It is important there should be a solid wall behind a children's writing table. This allows the child to have support so that he can sit there and study longer rather than for only half an hour and then they tend to move about because there is no solid wall behind their back. Adjust your writing table.

9) Do not allow children to sleep on double bunk beds even if it means saving space. The child sleeping underneath will not have "fresh chi" and so his health might be weak. But if due to space constraints, then monitor your child's health if not add in a metal 6 rods wind chime or a crystal sphere, to break up the "stale chi" around his bed.

10) Your bed should always have a solid wall behind you. This is important if you wish to have a good rest. A solid wall simply means that you can go into deeper sleep and therefore enabling you to have good rest so that when you wake up in the morning, you will feel fresh and well rested. This also allows you to be able to concentrate on your work better.
